In the team competition, Germany once again swept all before them as they won their thrid consecutive Olympic team gold medal, proving to be a class apart. USA and Sweden jumped off for the minor placings after Beezie Madden (USA) jumped her third clear round at the games. They finished in that order, Sweden winning their first Olympic medal in the discipline since 1928. In the individual competition, Olaf Petersens two courses were worthy of an Olympic final. Of the forty five who qualified, only Nick Skelton (GB) and Jessica Kuerton (IRL) jumped clear in the first round. In the final round, the form book was turned up side down by Cian O'Connor (IRL) who rode a rejuvenated Waterford Crystal to a brilliant clear to remain on his four fault score. He then watched as both Nick Skelton and Jessic Kuerton came to grief to drop out of the medals. This allowed Rodrigo Pessoa (BRA) and Chris Kappler (USA) to jump off for the Silver and Bronze, only for Kapplers horse Royal Kaliber to breakdown during his round. Kappler, however, was the only rider to win two showjumping medals at these games. Comprehensive highlight of all round in this two hour review.
